CARNE
2013-2019
"CARNE", which deals with the status, role and representation of the female figure in the media world of the 20th century.
CARNE ("meat" in Spanish), consists of 80 paintings depicting scenes taken from films, series, press and advertising, from the 1950s to today. What they all have in common is the use of women as part of propaganda designed to perpetuate a patriarchal culture that developed during the 20th century and whose aim is to preserve the man's place as dominant and strong in the face of the perception of the woman's place, in society, as passive and weak.
In images that perpetuate the situation where the man controls the power structure. The goal is also political and comes to serve the regime - to clean the political arena of women and preserve the image of the weak woman, with the aim of perpetuating the male hegemony. Thus, for example, in the 1970s, during the military dictatorship in Argentina, which was carried out overwhelmingly by men and during which more pornographic films were produced than in any other period. Even after the end of the dictatorship and during the reign of the neoliberal democracy, the presentation of the woman as a sexual object and as a victim of harassment by the man was an acceptable thing. In the 1980s and 1990s, my childhood years, we would watch television shows, in prime time, that depicted women as sexual objects, the objectification of which is a form of entertainment. The female characters were somehow always involved in violence or eroticism and sex. In the 80's, for example, in a comedy show, there was a regular segment called 'The Girl' (La Nena) which featured a girl who used to come to the seller at the newsstand to show him her butt. In Tineli's talk shows, from the 1990s until today, women appear who are sexually harassed, in minimal and erotic clothing, and are constantly subjected to the ridicule of the male audience. Sometimes the weakening of the woman was in the opposite way, when a group of men undress in the studio and try to crowd in front of a woman, usually an actress, who constantly tries to escape them.
The women who are exploited and weakened in the media receive, in my works, the opposite effect - of heroes and strong in the way that they sacrificed their dignity and their bodies and thus became a victim of the system of creating male hegemony in our collective subconscious. I try to present them as heroines.
